Madu Ganga

It is the one of delightful product from Mother Nature, located on the southern coast 98Km away from Colombo. Although Madhuganga is referred to as a river, technically it is an estuarine lagoon. It's characterized by 15 'true Islands' (Koth Duwa, Dik Duwa,Ma Duwa, Mema Duwa, Hon Duwa, Dimi Duwa, Erawana Duwa, Nai Duwa, Muwan Duwa, Merala Duwa, Galman Duwa, Katu Duwa, Mada Duwa, Gona Duwa, Thiniya Duwa) which are surrounded by water throughout the year and a number of natural waterways are connected with the Madhuganga estuarine system.

Ecology
Madhuganga is very rich in natural stands of mangroves. These mangroves are able to grow in salty or brackish water due to the development of special adaptations in these trees. These mangroves are impotence because they act as a nursery for small fish, prawns and other animals.

Flora
A special feature of Madhuganga is that the vegetation is rather undisturbed. There are in total 14 different species of mangroves and 302 different species of plants and trees to be found in Madhuganga. There is a very rare species (Rathamilla- Lumnitzera litttorea) which endemic in Sri Lanka on some spots around Madhuganga.

Fauna
Madhuganga is a wonderful place to observe animals and especially birds. The best time to do so is just after sunrise or just before sunset. During bird counts a total of 111 species of birds were found. Apart from birds there are many species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals.
