"A Rich Country - A Beautiful Beach ": World Environment Day 2025 Celebrated in Galle.
Under the theme "A Rich Country - A Beautiful Beach", the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management organized the World Environment Day 2025 celebration today (June 9, 2025) at the "Hall de Galle" auditorium in Galle. The event was held under the guidance of Director General Prof. P.B.Turney Pradeep Kumara.
The program was conducted under the patronage of the Minister of Environment, Dr. Dhammika Patabedige, with the participation of Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody, Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Rathna Gamagē, Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage, Environment Ministry Secretary Rohitha Uduwawala, and several officials from the Department of Coast Conservation.
The event also saw the participation of the District Secretary of Galle, officers of the Tri-Forces, other government officials, and school students from the district.
In line with the Clean Sri Lanka National Program, a site visit and review of the proposed development near the Galle Fort Lighthouse was conducted under the leadership of the Minister of Environment, focusing on the plan to develop 100 coastal zones as parks.
Construction activities for the Koggala Beach Park Project were carried out under the supervision of Deputy Minister Rathna Gamagē, while the Mahamodara Beach Park development was overseen by Deputy Minister Nalin Hewage.
The event officially commenced with a keynote address by Director General Prof. P.B.Turney Pradeep Kumara, centered on the global World Environment Day theme "Beat Plastic Pollution". A variety of programs followed, including student presentations and awareness sessions.
On March 27, 2025, Hon. Dr. Dhammika Patabendi, Minister of Environment, and Mr. K.R. Uduwawela, Ministry Secretary, conducted an inspection at the Department of Coastal Conservation and Coastal Resources Management head office. Director General Professor P.B. Turney Pradeep Kumara, along with departmental officers and regional office representatives, joined the event virtually.
Had a discussion with the World Bank and the Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management Department about nature-based solutions and how they can be applied to the Kalpitiya coastal stretch to mitigate long-term coastal erosion and ecosystem degradation. This is a great initiative for implementing nature-based solutions in Sri Lanka.
A full-day workshop on “Modern Practices in Preparing Technical Reports" was conducted 2025.03.19 for the staff officers of CC&CRMD. The session was expertly facilitated by the former consultant at world Bank, Dr.Indumathie Hewawasam LLB(Hons),M.A. PHD, a highly accomplished professional with extensive experience and a successful career in the field. The workshop aimed to enhance the officers' skills in creating effective and contemporary technical reports.
